VIOLENCE


Violent is described in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary as “using, showing or caused by strong (especially unlawful) physical force”, while violence is defined as “violent conduct, especially of an unlawful kind.” Violence is a spreading disease in today’s world, so called because violence may damage humanity. Violent conducts can be seen through violence towards other human beings, violence inflicted on oneself and violence on animals.

Violence inflicted on another human being is done through physical or emotional harmful acts towards the person. Gelles (2003) cites beating, physical intimidation and rape as examples of harmful physical acts. In extreme cases, these physical abuses may result in death. Consequently, Gelles (2003) defines emotional violence in the likes of threats to kill, restraint of normal activities and blackmails.
