CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE (CVD)

CVD includes all diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
Most common CVD’s
Ø Coronary heart disease

- occurs when blood supply to the heart is decreased by narrowing in one or more of the coronary arteries
- angina (chest pain that occurs as a result of cramping of heart muscle due to constricted arteries) is caused by this.
Ø Cerebrovascular Disease
- disease of the arteries of the brain
- interruption of blood supply to the brain caused by atherosclerosis (build up of fatty tissue on lining of arteries) results in a stroke. Can also occur when blood vessels burst in the brain
