Charlotte Gilman is an n author who strongly believes that the identity of individuals make up the overall identity of America. Gilman writes “The Yellow Wallpaper” from the perspective of being a woman in the late nineteenth century, when women had very well defined social roles. They were to be mothers and caretakers of the family, clean, well dressed people that were nice to look at, seen not heard, and irrational and emotional. Men placed these social roles on women. The author took full advantage as many other female writers did at this time, by using their writing as an outlet to express her distaste for the way that women were being treated. Women were finally speaking out against their repressors in a search for self-identity.
