Women in the Confederacy

Women in the South played an important role in the survival of the Confederacy during the Civil War. As the military conflicts ensued, the women were forced into a variety of positions that maintained the structure of Southern Life and also lead to changing opinions on the war.
When news of the war first spread throughout the South, women were encouraged, and supported men to join the Confederacy and fight for their Independence. As men began to leave, women not only had to perform the tasks that they were accustomed to, such as caring for children, but they were also forced to perform the daily chores of the men.
