Willy hides behind his visions of the world and therefore fails to realise the truth about himself and his family. Discuss how this is achieved and the effect it has on Biff.

‘Death of a Salesman’ by Arthur miller opens with Willy Loman, a sixty-year old salesman entering his house after what has seemingly been a hard day at work. “His exhaustion is apparent” and he admits being “tired to the death”.
After, Linda (his wife) carefully asks him “Where were you all day? You look terrible” he admits that he forgot how to drive and almost had an accident. Willy failing to maintain concentration on an everyday task such as driving suggests that he’s maybe under a lot of stress or has something on his mind. We later learn that his loss in concentration is a result of Biff coming home.
Did Biff say anything after I left his morning?

Willy talks with Linda about what happened, giving a valuable insight into their relationship as they both try to make excuses. “Maybe it was the coffee”, “Maybe it was the steering” before she tries to reassure him. “You’ll just have to take a rest”.
