Why should we write essays?

I think that essays are stupid. Teacher shouldn't require them becuase we do enough work in school as it is already. I'm a graduate of college, and I'm still writing essays. I feel as if i've been writing essays all my life, and it isn't fair. Why should we be subject to writing things that we don't want to write about?
