Types of reactions Synthesis ¡V When two or more substance combines to form a new, more complex substance the reaction is called synthesis. Synthesis occurs when small molecules combine to form large molecules such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates. A biological synthesis is called anabolism. Example - Glucose + Fructose „³ Sucrose + water A + B „³ AB Decomposition ¡V It is the reverse of synthesis. Complex substances are broken down into two or more simpler substances. Decompositions in living things is called catabolism, it involves the release of energy.
