Twelfth Night Essay

[HOOK] In Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, obsession over

someone is often mistaken for romance. [TH] True love in fact does not exist in the play. The

characters are merely infatuated with each other based upon (ARG 1) appearance, (ARG 2)

friendship, and (ARG 3) wealth.

[TS] Appearances play a big role in the plot line by showing that most of the characters

only become interested in one another depending on their looks. [LEAD UP 1] Duke Orsino

claims to be madly in love with the rich Illariyn countess Olivia, despite the fact that he has

never spoken to her: [EX 1] "Why so I do, the noblest that I have./ O, when mine eyes did see

Olivia first,/ Methought she purged the air of pestilence!/ That instant was I turn'd into hart:/

And my desires, like fell and cruel hounds,/ E'er since pursue me." (1,1,18-23) [EXPLAIN 1]

After being stunned by Olivia's radiating beauty, Orsino has convinced hims...
