TRAGIC HERO

The development of Othello’s tragic flaw began at the very start of the play. His love for Desdemona and their unapproved marriage was the root of Othello’s downfall. As well, the fact that Iago is angered by Othello’s decision to elect Cassio simply added to Othello’s eventual defeat. Iago has a lot of contempt towards Othello and Roderigo is simply jealous because he himself was in love with Desdemona. “What a full fortune does the thicklips owe/ If he can carry't thus!” (Act 1 Scene 1 Line71-72). These words of Roderigo’s, right at the beginning of the play foreshadow Othello’s downfall. Othello trusts both Iago and Roderigo. This irony is the cause of his tragedy. Although both these characters look extremely loyal to Othello, they deceive him by calling him names like "Barbary Horse." (Act 1 Scene 1 Line 113) behind his back.
