TOURISM EDUCATION

The main areas for consideration in this research are the roles of interpretation, education, learning, and museums, and to identify any major changes in these areas since the publication of the Rosse Report in 1963. The aims of this literature review are, therefore, to establish key components that make up the above research areas and to provide a framework from which the project can develop and make reference to.

Weiler and Hall (1992:48) state ‘Heritage tourism based on history tends to be education-orientated and includes guided tours of buildings, monuments and ruins, dramatic sound and light performances and the re-enactment of historically significant occasions’. From this statement, Weiler and Hall are highlighting their belief that history and education have a propensity to be closely linked and draw attention to some of the methods that museums, or any historical based attraction, can use to facilitate interpretation.
