time required to defrost a car windshield

Determination of Time to Defrost 10mm of Ice on a Typical Car Windshield

Abstract

Many every-day problems involve heat transfer. One typical problem is the time it takes to defrost a car window. So how long does a car need to warm up before the ice can be whisked away by the wipers? This can easily be calculated with enough known parameters. For example a car window with an outside temperature of 250K and an inside defroster with a maximum temperature of 300K takes 14 minutes to defrost. In comparison if the car window has an outside temperature of 250K and an inside defroster of with a maximum temperature of 305.5K it only takes 13.5 minutes to defrost. It is also interesting to note that if the temperature outside is increased to 261K it only takes 9.3 minutes to defrost the windshield.
