Often in literature, authors use a friendship between characters to reveal the theme or some truth about human nature. Friendship furthers the action and the plot. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, from Sumerian literature, Enkidu and Gilgamesh's friendship is the catalyst for the entire epic which reveals the theme "There is no permanence."
To begin, the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu is like brotherhood. From the time Gilgamesh and Enkidu meet to the point where Enkidu dies, the two friends spend all their time together.
