Theme in "Gryphon" by charles baxter

“Gryphon”

“Things are not always what they seem to be.” The meaning of this quote is that one cannot always look at something, and determine what it is at a first glance; one must always try to find a deeper meaning in things we stumble upon in life, be they complex matters such as people, or more simple objects like trees. This concept is the theme of the short story “Gryphon”, by Charles Baxter. In matters such as Miss Ferenczi, the idea that six times eleven is sixty-six but also sixty-eight, and the Hope Diamond.
