In The Zone
There you are, pumped up and ready to go play in one of the most important hockey games of your life. You start the game with full adrenaline and anxiety. Towards the end of the second period, you notice that you begin to get tired way before the end of your forty-second shift. You start to think, “Why is this happening to me?” You start looking back at what you did before the game: what you ate, what you drank, and what, if any, physical activity you took part in. You recall that greasy, mayonnaise dripping, Big Mac with bacon and extra cheese, a side of salty, Super Size fries and that extra large Coke, yet you look past it. As you are thinking back to before the game you, remember that nice nap you had about five hours before the game. You are completely oblivious to the fact that your physical and mental state affect how well you perform; what you eat and do (or don’t do) play important roles in your athletic abilities.
