Ted Hughes uses the poems “Relic” and “Pike” to show the dark side of nature. Between the two poems, Hughes conveys a cynical and predator-like message about the world that surrounds us. To relay these messages to the reader, Hughes uses very realistic descriptions of a Jawbone (“Relic”) and a Pike (“Pike”). When Hughes thrilling descriptions are unfolded, the reader has the opportunity to see the deepest and most provocative thoughts on nature. In the poem “Relic”, these thoughts deal with topics such as, the more disturbing side of evolution and the circle of life. Also in “Pike”, issues like killing to survive and how nature takes what it needs and disregards the rest are introduced.
The biggest message these two poems deliver is that animals are killers that have to kill to survive. As humans, we have lost touch with survival in the hunter-gatherer sense of the word. However, the an...
