In The Wife of Martin Guerre, issues which occurred society in sixteenth century France are presented in detail by Janet Lewis. The novel presents issues that relate to the social structures of the society. After reading The wife of Martin Guerre, in great detail issues presented in the novel have encouraged my understanding of particular issues. These issues demonstrated, captured the response of the reader as they are compared to issues in today’s society.

In the small town of Artigue, a marriage is celebrated between to families for their young children Martin Guerre and Bertrande de Rols. Martin decides he’s done wrong after he plants grain against his father’s wishes. Stating to his wife Bertrande he will be only gone eight days, which turned into eight years when he suddenly returned to his new position of cap d’hostal, husband and father.
