Medical Marijuana Use
Before 1937, at least twenty-seven medicines containing marijuana were legally available in the United States. Many were made by well-known pharmaceutical firms that still exist today, such as Squibb (now Bristol-Meyers Squibb) and Eli Lilly. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 federally prohibited marijuana all together. Dr. William C. Woodward of the American Medical Association opposed the Act, testifying that prohibition would ultimately prevent the medicinal uses of marijuana. The legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes has become an increasingly controversial topic, on which people have many different opinions. There is opposition to the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes because it has the potential to be used incorrectly. It is also considered that there is the potential for marijuana to be used in relieving the suffering of many seriously ill patients such as cancer, ...
