The Responsibility to do Right

Although Cry, the Beloved Country, Snow Falling on Cedars, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were written in very different time periods, all encompass similar characteristics. A common theme of the characters struggling against the odds to accomplish and follow through with what they believe is morally right is present in all three novels. The guilt that is felt and the responsibility to do the right thing weighs on the consciences of Stephen Kumalo, James Jarvis, Carl Heine, Ishmael Chambers, and Huck Finn. The will and dedication of these characters to their morals allows them to become stronger and follow through to achieve what they feel is right and necessary. With a lack of morals, hesitating to act on their morals, or the wrong morals, all hope is lost.
In Cry, the Beloved Country the protagonist is the reverend Stephen Kumalo. The main theme of the novel is Stephen Kumalo fighting against the white oppression that is tearing his family and country apart. Kumal...
