The Outsider

I agree with the statement that “it was not the crime of murder that led to Meursault’s death.” Meursault lives a life, which is unable to be comprehended by his society and it is this disparity, which eventually contributes to his downfall. Throughout the book he shows a lack of ambition, is influenced by physical sensations and he refuses to discriminate against other people in his community. None of these characteristics are accepted in his society, and is therefore seen as “…a man whose heart is so empty that it forms a chasm which threatens to engulf society.”
