The Madonna enthroned by Giotto The Madonna Enthroned by Giotto is a clash between the art of the Catholic West and Orthodox East of the thirteenth century. This clash of both art forms resulted in the Byzantine style. This picture is the representation of Mary enthroned as the Queen of heaven. She holds a baby. This baby is the representation of Christ who, according to medieval precedent is a little adult. The gold weave on the drapery worn by the figures in this picture represent gleaming light. The flowing lines distinguish the artist as Greek. Italian influence is shown here as well. This is shown in the crown of light, the standpoint of the wooden throne with its tall back and the proportion of light and shade. In this picture the images all appear to be quite close.
