2) One of the major ominous signs is the black box. Black is the colour of death and that would be an odd colour to choose for the typical lottery that most people think about. Another sign is when Mrs. Hutchinson freaks out when her husband has the black dot on his paper, at that moment you begin to think that this is not the typical everyday lottery.

3) I think Shirley Jackson’s purpose in taking a recognizable setting then placing within it a horrifying event is so that people can relate other events to it.
The boys horde over the stones as if they were money.
