The Hemingway Code of Values

Ernest Hemingway was one of the greatest of the twentieth century. His dynamic way of writing still amazes readers and critics alike today. One of the main traits that make Hemingway’s literature popular today is his consistency in using his own set of values as templates for his books. This technique has become to be known as, “Hemingway’s Code”. In almost all Hemingway’s literature the protagonist demonstrates the Hemingway Code. The purpose of this essay is to explain some of the values expressed in the “Hemingway Hero”
Grace under pressure is, perhaps, the most prominent value that Hemingway fancies. Almost all of the protagonists in Hemingway’s collection of stories exhibit this trait. This value intertwines with another value, bravery, which will be explained later in this essay.
