The Great Gatsby: Novel and Film Comparison

“The Great Gatsby” was written in 1925 by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
It is about Nick Carraway who upon moving to New York in 1922 rents a house next door to a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby who lives in a gothic mansion and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night. As the summer progresses, Nick eventually gets an invitation to one of Gatsby's legendary parties. He encounters Jordan Baker at the party, and they meet Gatsby himself who it turns out is in love with Nick’s cousin Daisy and the parties are an attempt to impress her.

“The Great Gatsby” is seen as a story of the romance between a man and women pulled apart by fate and then finding each other again. It is also a story of the jealousy in men and women and the American dream gone terribly wrong.
Although “The Great Gatsby” is a symbol of the 1920’s, its themes and its picture of the human condition can be seen as part of any era.
