the fishing trip

THE FISHING TRIP

After a long drive from Caboolture in convoy with two other families, we arrived at the Gladstone dock in time to see the finishing yachts, in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race enter the harbour. We all helped the ‘deckies’ Dave and Chris to load our gear onto the ‘Curtis Ambassador’ for a week of fishing and relaxing on the Great Barrier Reef.

Ray, the Captain, told us that we weren’t leaving until the high tide at midnight, so as
Gladstone was alive with people from the yacht race we ventured over to the carnival and had some fun at the local show. After we came back to the boat we all settled down for an early night in preparation for the big adventure. At 9 p.m. there was a disturbance coming from my sister’s and her friend’s cabin – Lauren was seasick, and we hadn’t even left the dock. This was going to be an interesting trip!

Early the next morning the engines were cut and we awoke to see the sun rising over Lady Musgrave Island. ...
