The Evolution of the Vampire


The myth of the vampire has been around for many generations. However, like other myths, over time the aspects of the vampire have changed. This change is evident in Polidori’s Vampyre, Dreyer’s Vampyr film, and Interview with the Vampire. Though similar in many ways, they vary in their conflicts and elements. The elements that can be found throughout all three works are that of secrecy, pale dead skin, and superhuman strength. By looking at each work individually, one can see both the similarities and differences.
In Polidori’s Vampyr, the elements of secrecy, pale dead skin and superhuman strength are evident throughout the story. The story begins in mystery when the character of Lord Ruthven is described. “His peculiarities caused him to be invited to every house; all wish to see him…(Pg. 265). The reader gets the sense of secrecy that surrounds Lord Ruthven right away. He is described as being pale in color,...
