A snack food is seen in Western culture as a type of food that is not meant to be eaten as part of one of the main of the day such as breakfast and lunch. Rather, the food is intended as something to temporarily tide a person's hunger and provide a brief supply of energy for the body. Some examples of snack foods are potato chips, corn chips, popcorn, pretzels, extruded cheese snacks, seed snacks, peanuts. The most consumed is potato crisp amongs them. It was discovered in 1853 in the USA. Then it became a commercial food when Julius Sturgis set up the first commercial pretzel bakery in Lancaster County, Pa in 1861. After a few decades potato crisp became a huge industry and spread all around the world.

In the 1950s and 1960s the potato crisp became a highly consumed product in the UK. Although there were a lot of small local producers of potato crisp, Smiths had the far highest share of the market. It was like a monopoly in the market. They had 24 factories and a large distributio...
