The Cask of Amontillado

The Cask of Amontillado, a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, is full of irony. The story is about a man who swears revenge upon his friend. Montresor vowed revenge upon his friend, Fortunado, after he insulted him. He lies to Fortunado by making up a story to lure him into his basement where he will bury him alive. The story has many ironic parts from actions, to words spoken, to even the name of a character. There are two main types of irony in the story, which are verbal and dramatic.
First, “The Cask of Amontillado” has many examples of verbal irony. One example is Montresor’s family motto. Montresor takes Fortunato into the catacombs to punish him for insulting Montresor.
