Szill and the Cleveland Orchestra. He made his German conducting debut in 1972, and he made his United States conducting debut in 1978 with a production of Verdi’s La traviata. In 1981 he was named principal guest conductor of Zurich’s Tonhalle Orchestra and became chief conductor in 1982. He has led the Houston Symphony in 1983 and was named music director in 1988. Eschendach made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut, as a piano soloist, in February 1973; his Philadelphia conducting debut was in October 1989. Eschenbach has received many awards, including the Commander’s Cross and the Officer’s Cross with Ribbon of the German Order of Merit, and the Leonard Bernstein Award from the Pacific Music Festival.
