the appraissal of a major theoretical appraoch

This paper will appraise the instrumentalist approach and its relevance to understanding the media in contemporary society. Instrumentalists focus on the way that the capitalists that is the people whom are in control of the media use their economic power and status in a commercial market to ensure that the public information given is parallel with their interests. Academics such as Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky have studied this theory and in their book Manufacturing Consent: The political economy of the mass media (1988) they have created what is called a ‘Propaganda model’ of the media in the USA which argues that the individuals in control can ‘tamper’ with the dialogue to elect what the general public is allowed to see, hear and think about.
