Lord of the Flies

The Lord of the Flies is a good novel, with many symbols and symbolism. The symbol that I have chosen to write about is the conch. I believe that the author William Golding shows how authority and power can be so disrespected and undermined. Golding also shows many other objects in the novel, but none as eye catching as the conch. Even with the beauty of the conch it was still destroyed as well as the tribe of boys.
The conch is a sea shell that Piggy and Ralph had found while they were walking around the island looking for other survivors. Golding showed us how beautiful the conch was with a brief description “ the color the shell was a deep cream touched here and there with fading pink, between where the point worn away in a little hole and the pink lips of the mouth lay 18 in. in shell with slight spiral twist, covered with delicate embossed pattern” (16).
