In Stearns essay about why we should study history, he tries to give factual evidence of why studying history is important to us and why it is not useless information. In his first argument he conveys to the reader that history helps us understand people and societies. In this argument he goes on to give us reasons why history helps us understand people and societies by saying “How can we understand genius, the influence of technological innovation, or the role that beliefs play in shaping a family life, if we don’t use what we know about experiences in the past?” (p.2) in this passage he makes a valid point on how history gives us something to compare to or to see the importance of things in our own lives.
