St. Mawr

D. H. Lawrence wrote and published the short novel St. Mawr in 1925. The novel concerns an American girl, Lou Witt, who has lived for most of her life in Europe and has an outstanding stallion, St. Mawr. The two travel to Texas, accompanied by Lou’s mother Mrs. Witt. Soon they take up residence at a nearby ranch, not known exact location, where St. Mawr begins to take interest in the ranch foreman’s “long-legged, arched-necked, glossy-manned Texan mare.”
Throughout sections of the story many themes are expressed. The experiences that Lou faces throughout the novel are related also with the narrator. Lawrence provides us with his impression of Texas and Texans, mostly the San Antonio surrounding areas, when he talks about how Lou and Mrs. Witt have to drive into San Antonio to take the train to El Paso. Lawrence’s impressions on Texans in apparent for his narration describe Texans as being extremely transparent, straightforward, and shallow:
