SOFIA`S CENTRAL TRAIN STATION

BLAGOEVGRAD- Sofia’s Central Train Station will undergo a major yearlong renovation starting in April 2002. The renovation, which is one of the most ambitious projects of the municipality of Sofia, anticipates an entire renovation of the area around the Rotonda and the subways Maria Luisa, and Hristo Botev.
Three project proposals for the renovation have been reviewed by the final phase. The architects who first built the station prepared the one that was selected as the most successful. “The plan is a combination of novel and retro elements,” said Milan Dobrev, the chief architect of the project. The complex is to be covered with a giant tent-like construction and will have two floors of shops, restaurants and children’s playground. A three-floor underground parking lot will also be built.
The Sofia Municipal Fund will pay approximately $3.5 million for the renovation. The area around the station will be reconstructed and managed by Egyda Municipal Firm.
