Socrates was a mysterious and significant figure in the history of philosophy. He lived between 469 and 399 B.C., was the son of a mason and was a stonecutter by trade. Except for periods of military service abroad, Socrates lived all of his life in Athens.
Socrates was well-known in the streets and marketplaces of Athens. He spent the majority of his time striking up philosophical and ethical discussions with men and women on topics such as love, politics, war, friendship, poetry, religion, science, and moral issues. In doing this, Socrates became a respected teacher of philosophy by simply drifting around the city with his students and asking questions of them and strangers.
