Socrates

Interesting Fact:

Socrates (469-399), despite his foundational place in the history of ideas, actually wrote nothing. Most of our knowledge of him comes from the works of Plato (427-347), and since Plato had other concerns in mind than simple historical accuracy it is usually impossible to determine how much of his thinking actually derives from Socrates.
Early Life

His Father was the sculptor Sophroniscus.
Socrates inherited a modest fortune from his father.
Socrates used this financial independence as a way to give all of his attention to philosophy.
Socrates was a soldier during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 B.C.).
His father taught him to be a sculptor, but Socrates gave it up after the war.
Socrates was married to Xanthippe. They had several children together.
Socrates studied under Archelaus.
He set the standard for western philosophy.
