Snow Falling on Cedars:Character Analysis;Ishamel Chambers

In the book Snow Falling on Cedars, David Guterson introduces the character Ishmael Chambers. He is a bitter and resentful man, due to rejection from his past love, the trauma of war, and trying to live up to his father’s reputation.
Ishmael Chambers had feelings for Hatsue Imada for as long as he could remember. They grew up playing innocently together at the beach, but as time progressed, feelings came into play. In chapter eight, at the age of fourteen, “He had known her for six years and he had not known her. The detached part of her, the part she kept to herself, had begun to interest him deeply.”(121) This is an important chapter in the book, for Guterson shows how Ishmael’s feelings for Hatsue begin at a young age, and are very strong. Ishmael begins to obsess over Hatsue, spying on her and thinking about her constantly.
