Snoops and Scoops.

- E.K. Hornbeck (Hornbeck is the king of comedy in this story, we see this early on in his witty remarks to Mrs. Krebs and when he starts to converse with the monkey).
MRS. KREBS: (Unctously, to Hornbeck) “You’re a stranger, aren’t you, mister? Want a nice clean place to stay?” HORNBECK: “I had a nice clean place to stay, madame, and I left it to come here.” (pp. 13)

- As well, throughout the book, Hornbeck makes several jokes about Brady, which of course are not directed at him, but said loud enough so he hears.


- Hornbeck the big tease
(To Rachel) HORNBECK: (Quietly) “I give advice, at remarkably low hourly rates. Ten percent off to unmarried young ladies, and special discounts to the clergy and their daughters.” (pp. 28)

- Several times throughout we’ve seen Drummond build up to a good argument, only to be interrupted by the witty remarks of Brady, followed by the scowling of the audience.
DRUMMOND: “Mrs. Cain. ...
