Slavery History and Culture

We all know that slavery is a very serious issue. Yet slavery is one of the very things that built our country and also helped run it in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds. To take a human being out of their environment in chains, force them on a boat, and bring them to another country to be sold for work is really a very harsh punishment for doing nothing wrong at all. The richest and most powerful people were plantation owners in the beginning of our country. Although slavery doesn't exist today in our country, it is important to know about slavery history and culture to understand its importance and how it helped shape America.
The first slaves were taken from Africa soon after Columbus's landing, but they were not taken to America until around the 1700s. Most of the early slaves were taken to Spanish and Portuguese South America or to the sugar-rich West Indies.
