Descartes proposes to seek knowledge by withholding his assent from everything from which it is possible to do so; this means that he will not have any opinion about anything which can be doubted or he is not sure of. In this way he can find out which things are completely undoubtable, and this knowledge he can trust. If something can either be right or wrong and there is no way of deciding upon which, he will withhold his assent and believe neither opinion.
Descartes search for knowledge is a search for the indububitable because he has set out to question everything and this means that he will not rely on or trust anything or anybody as you might in a normal everyday situation.
