Romanticism

Romanticism allows the imagination of an individual to go beyond the strict limits set by Classicism and Puritanism. Some literary works written during this time period contain mysterious, odd, occult, and monstrous characters in surreal situations, but with realistic solutions. In an example of this genre is the short story, “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving, in which Tom Walker stumbles upon a man who happens to be the devil.
