Reading Reflection – Preaching – by Fred B. Craddock
Summary and Reflection
The second book for reading and reflection was entitled Preaching written by Fred B. Craddock. This book was divided into three sections: Preaching: An Overview, Preaching: Having Something to Say, and Preaching: Shaping the Message into a Sermon.
The first section basically gave insight into why we preach, what its purpose is, and how to develop one’s own theology of preaching which is reflected in the pulpit. One thing I found interesting was when Craddock said “Stated summarily, the preacher is expected to be a person of faith, passion, authority, and grace. Faith makes one believable...Passion makes one persuasive...Authority is that which gives one the right to speak...And finally, grace is that which keeps the speaker a listener.” This really impacted me when I read it because I’ve seen preachers who lack in some of these areas.
