Random Drug Testing in the Workplace

Ron reported to work at 3:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. Ron was involved in an accident and a call was placed to 911 for emergency medical help. The paramedics arrived and quickly began trying to save Ron’s life. Investigation into the accident revealed that Ron’s co-worker was the cause of the accident and drug tests revealed he had been abusing drugs. Random drug testing in the workplace should be allowed because it saves lives, increases a company’s ability to compete in the market place, and helps society reduce the drug problem.
Statistics illustrate how dangerous the workplace has become. The U. S. Drug Enforcement Agency reports that 75 percent of illegal drugs consumed are used by people with jobs (Ferraro). Users of illegal drugs put lives of co-workers, families, and the public in jeopardy.
