The far northeast coast of Tasmania was one of the earliest parts of the state to be noticed by white man but was one of the latest to be developed. This was due to its rugged terrain and enormous forests that covered the mountains and valleys. Able, Bass and Flinders were first to set eyes on this area around the early 1800s. Settlement began on the outskirts of the N.E. in the early 1830s but it wasn’t until the government surveyor, James Scott made the journey from Launceston in March 1855 that revealed the immense possibilities of the rich soil in the N.E. area. The town of Legerwood was first to be settled in the N.E., followed by Branxholm. After these towns were formed men went in search of gold. Gold was first found in 1852 in three different places, Mount Victoria, Alberton and Gladstone. Tin was then found. Tin ore was first found before the 1870s by three brothers, Charles, Frederick and Christopher Krushka while they were cutting tracks for the other...
