Chapter 1-Introduction to Psychology

Psychology: The scientific study of behavior and mental processes and how they are affected by an organism's physical state, mental state and external environment.

Psychology's Relatives: Sociology, Anthropology, Medicine(Psychiatry), Biology

Psychology's Past: Phrenology-Joseph Gall (1758-1828). He thought that different brain areas accounted for specific character and personality traits. Such traits could be read from bumps on the skull. This was an example of a pseudoscience.

1879-Psychology as a formal science was born. The first Psychological laboratory was established in Leipzig, Germany by Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920). His goal was to make Psychology a science.
