However it is defined, poverty remains a major factor in the lives of many important groups in UK society. Despite the numerous policy initiatives since the war no government has successfully tackled poverty.


It seems that Poverty is and always will be a major factor in the lives of people in Britain and worldwide. Poverty in Britain is unfortunately a fact of life, it is a condition in which a person lacks many of the basic necessities of life and the income needed to buy them.
Britain is a welfare state that is it is a state with social services, controlled or financed by the government. These services aim to protect the weaker members of society from young to old. As Beverage described it a welfare state is the provision of services for the prevention of,
“disease, squalor, want, idleness and ignorance” ( Fiona Williams, 1995 :27)
