After reading the excerpts on heroism, I’m still left guessing what makes a hero. We have two defining articles that clearly state the author’s beliefs on the subject at hand, however the problem is they stand at complete opposite ends of the heroic spectrum. In “Real Superheroes”, author Dan Levin explains that the heroes of our society aren’t the Batman’s and Spiderman’s of the fictitious world. In fact he believes that the true heroes that walk among us are the underappreciated, the police officers, fire fighters, and our freedom fighting soldiers. On the flip side we have “Hero Inflation”, by Nicholas Thompson. Thompson withholds a very different point of view. Likewise, he believes that our officers, fire fighters and soldiers are underappreciated, however here he brings forth a controversial twist. He questions the heroism of these acclaimed heroes by simply asking why.
As I read and reread Levin’s essay I can’t help but feel enraged. I truly believe ...
