POPe

The building rested on a hill overlooking the Charlotte Amailie harbor in St. Thomas. It was built by slaves during the 1700s with large "ash-colored" stone and held together with mollasses. The stones and mollases possessed a dull gllisten and were meshed together forming an elongated checkered pattern. The buliding seemed to cast a shadow one side of the hill as the sun rose and descended, itself casting an impossing shadow on the caribbean sea. At the entrance, a lofty statue towered and recognized the accomplishments of Sir Francis Drake and it seemed to monitor those entering and leaving the building. A group of students stood in a circle around the statue, at the entrance of the St. James Catholic School, awaiting the arrival of the 2:30 p.m. school bus. The group consisted of students of various ages, both male and female, but none where younger than the typical junior high pupil and the oldest were high school senoirs.
