James Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri on February 1st, 1902 to James Hughes, a businessman, and Carrie Hughes, a teacher. Shortly after he was born, his parents separated and his father moved to Mexico, becoming an almost completely estranged figure in his life. Because of his mother’s difficulty finding work, Hughes moved back and forth between his grandmother and family friends, who lived in Cleveland. He began writing poetry in eighth grade, and was chosen as Class Poet. In his high school in Cleveland, he experienced popularity and good grades.
