Philip Marlowe - Charater sketch

Philip Marlowe is the classic private detective who plays by his own rules. He is the narrator through whose eyes the world of Los Angeles is portrayed. Every character is described as perceived by Marlowe; he is a keen observer of female physical beauty, as well as very cynical about their personalities. He plays the part of the protagonist who critiques the world and its people from the outside.
The reader forms opinions of the characters based on how they have been illustrated by Philip Marlowe, though the reader can form his/her own opinions and could possibly have contrasting views as opposed to the narrator. Philip Marlowe the quintessential detective can be compared to an artist and a scientist. Like the artist he looks inside the world of Los Angeles and critiques it. He is also required to speculate and weigh the pros and cons of different situations like a scientist. His way of conjuring up at the end that Rusty Regan had been killed by Carmen because he had refused to sleep...
