Most of my life I shunned all three of these approaches, and opted for the scream-my-head-off-until-someone-takes-my-side way of dealing with things. It wasn’t until I was involved with my first serious relationship as an adult that I began to react to life’s difficulties in a different manner. When I discovered that my boyfriend had cheated on me with several different women, I went through all of it…running away, being immobilized and even seeking outside help. It wasn’t until I took responsibility for myself, and allowed myself to realize that what I was experiencing was painful, but a reality, that I began to take steps to calmly eliminate a very negative person from my life. It’s amazing what driving a man ten miles into the country, telling him to grow up, and driving away from him will do for your self-esteem.
